Resumo: The number of components determination in a complex mixture of substances is a fundamental problem for which various solutions with different accuracy may be applied, as a function of decisions taken along the analytical process, starting from sample preparation, following to the chromatographic technique, the injection mode, the chromatographic column, and the detection system employed. This article presents some examples to illustrate the incidence of several of these parameters on the definition of how many components are really present in a complex mixture.
