Resumo: This chapter of “Pillars of Chromatography” presents the development of liquid-liquid column chromatography, described in a brief publication that, in addition to relating the first use of a liquid stationary phase for the separation of monoamino-acids also proposed the concept of the height of a theoretical plate to evaluate the efficiency of a separation. This ten page publication resulted in the Nobel Prize for 1952 for its authors, A. J. P. Martin and R. L. M. Synge.
