Resumo: This chapter of “Pillars of Chromatography” describes the antecedents from antiquity up to the beginning of the twentith century of the separation method today called ion exchange chromatography. The process of ion exchange was applied in the Middle East by Moses, Aristotle and others, in the Middle Ages by alchemists and described, incluing with a proposal of the ion exchange mechanism, in the nineteenth century. Thus, ion exchange chromatography could be considered the oldest chromatographic technique.
