Resumo After several years of experience in training beginners in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC×GC) we found the most time consuming step in the learning process of this technique was the evaluation of system performance and principles of method transference from one-dimensional to GC×GC. Even for experienced one dimensional gas chromatographers, the signs of a bad separation in a two dimensional chromatogram are different from the ones in one dimensional GC. In addition, the number of variables to be optimized increased by the presence of the extra column which operates under its own experimental conditions, and the modulator. Based on these observations, this paper presents a discussion on important aspects to observe before moving a GC method into GC×GC. It also presents systematic experiments to perform as practical classes or routine analysis to evaluate the system performance and the quality of chromatographic columns. A diagram with systematic steps for transferring a one-dimensional method to a GC×GC method was demonstrated as a learning tool. The use of these routines enables consistent equipment performance evaluation and systematization in transfer methods seeking the best separation efficiency offered by the technique.
