Resumo There has been thirty years since the first coupling between capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry (CE-MS). New instrumentations and methodologies have been developed, due to several applications, including metabolomics. CE-MS interfaces are at the core of these innovations, aiming at better integration between both techniques and allying the advantages of electrophoretic separations and the power of identification of mass spectrometry. For this reason, CE-MS has been currently established as a routine approach in many laboratories within different research areas. Metabolomics and its bioanalytical applications is a stand out area towards distinct use of CE-MS methodologies and instrumentation. It encompasses a broad spectrum of applications, including the discovery of new insights related to the mechanism, diagnostics or treatment of a particular disease, and investigations related to environmental or nutritional issues. This review intends to present the most relevant innovations regarding the coupling between the two techniques that led CE-MS to be consolidated as a resourceful platform for metabolomics applications.
